There are a number of ways to approach this: compulsion and/or training. We opted for a combination of the two.
Certain systems within the school can now only be accessed via Frog, such as cover, email, meeting minutes, briefing sessions, the school diary. We ran an advertising campaign around the school and provided basic training for all staff to show them how to use the system.
Key members of staff from each department were given more advanced training to show them how to develop their own department areas and how to add/remove material for students. These staff then help other staff within their department so that there are a number of people that any member of staff can call upon if they want to know how to do something.
We have offered individual staff and whole-department training, and even trained pupils to develop sites/pages/resources for themselves and for departments. Our pupils have been encouraged to tell their staff what they would like to see and what they need on our VLE, so that even those with a fear of technology have a reason to learn new things.
THE BEST ADVICE
Keep it simple. The best websites are simple and intuitive to use. All stakeholders need to be able to access and use the platform easily.
Development comes with time. We have had our learning platform for just over a year and are currently on version 3, which is a huge leap forward from our initial layout. The functionality remains the same, just with a few more bells and whistles added.
Giving staff, students and parents a reason to access the platform is vital. We have tried to integrate our VLE into every aspect of our school community. The biggest challenge is keeping up with the demands for more features as staff and students drive us on.
